The shooting incident occurred at Primrose Primary School in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, which is east of Johannesburg. The suspect, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, was whisked away by the South African Police Service and is still in custody. The principal is now getting treatment at a Johannesburg hospital.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed the incident:

“The circumstances that led to the shooting are unknown at this stage. Police have launched an investigation to establish the origin of the firearm, which has been seized by police. The pupil is expected to appear before the Germiston magistrate’s court soon.”

This is not the first instance where a pupil fires a gun at a principal or a teacher.

In 2022, a 16-year-old pupil in KwaZulu-Natal shot and wounded his teacher following an argument at Mqhawe Secondary School in Ntuzuma. His teacher had reprimanded him for making noise while matric pupils were writing an exam. After the teacher rebuked him, the pupil threatened the teacher and told him that he would shoot him once they had finished classes, which he did.

That same year, a student from Tembisa shot and killed his teacher because he had failed his matric.

South Africans online expressed shock and complained after a Primrose Primary School pupil shot his principal.

King James:

“How did this little boy get a gun?”

Maswazi:

“Corporal punishment was banished. These are the consequences. Unlike us, whilst growing up and attending school, we respected our teachers and any older person you’d come across. For a 13-year-old to take a gun from home, or wherever, and get it to school to shoot a principal…”

Thizozo:

Let’s see if parents will run to the school and blame teachers like they always do.”
