Minister’s Mid-Air Miracle: Dr Aaron Motsoaledi Saves Passenger on East London Flight
Dr Aaron Motsoaledi wears many hats beyond his well-known role as the Minister of Home Affairs in South Africa.
Beyond his ministerial role, he stands as a qualified medical practitioner, and recently, he lived up to the Hippocratic oath.
Former Gauteng provincial legislator Ndzipho Kalipa took to Twitter, also known as “X,” to publicly acknowledge Motsoaledi’s actions.
This was in light of his commendable intervention on a Flysafair flight from East London to Johannesburg.
A man in his early forties had fainted due to critically low blood sugar levels.
Fortune smiled upon the situation as Motsoaledi, holder of a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Natal, happened to be one of the 158 passengers aboard flight FA249.
Kalipa saluted Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, hailing him as a selfless hero,
“On behalf all passengers that were on board a Flysafair flight from East London to Joburg earlier this evening. We salute a selfless and heroic intervention by minister Dr Aron Motsoaledi who attended a sick passenger on the flight. Thank you Minister for your selflessness!!”

How Home Affairs Minister Saved Passenger’s Life
Reflecting on the incident in an interview with News24, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi recounted how he saved the man’s life.
“In my clinical judgment, he had low blood sugar. They [the crew and his pharmacist wife] were struggling to give him a mixture as a sugar solution and I said he won’t be able to drink it, so I took a glucose powder and rubbed it on his gums and tongue. He absorbed the powder through this method,” he told News24.
