Renewal and forgiveness seem to be the themes of the moment for renowned producer and DJ, Nkosinathi “Black Coffee” Maphumulo. Following his declaration of embracing spirituality, the hitmaker has finally buried the hatchet with his longtime friend and protégé, Ashley “Shimza” Raphala.
Black Coffee and Shimza’s feud
“Shimza felt stagnant, perceiving Nathi as hindering his progress,” revealed the insider. “However, this perception wasn’t entirely accurate. Black Coffee was nurturing his own career, collaborating with the likes of Culoe De Song, Thiwe, DJ Kabila, and others. Perhaps, the mentorship aspect lacked intensity, leading Shimza to feel neglected.

” It was disclosed that Black Coffee ceased to book Shimza, a claim substantiated by Shimza himself in an interview. “I noticed a decline in bookings from his end, and there seemed to be obstacles in booking him for my gigs. His rates were also on the higher side,” Shimza expressed. “At some point, I contemplated the viability of our relationship. Nonetheless, we eventually decided to engage and resolve our differences.”
The Reconciliation Process
In a prior interview, Black Coffee hinted at the complexity of their relationship evolution. “As we evolve, we may fail to recognize when our friendships outgrow their purpose. My reference extends beyond Shimza alone,” he articulated. “It’s imperative to discern when a friendship turns toxic. We engaged in numerous discussions, culminating in a pivotal meeting at Oskido’s residence.” He reflected on his personal growth during that period.

Rebuilding Bridges
Black Coffee affirmed their reconciliation by extending an olive branch to Shimza, inviting him to his birthday festivities. Shimza was also among the guests at a surprise dinner arranged in honour of Black Coffee at Signature Restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg. “Their rapport has significantly improved,” remarked the mutual friend. “Though friendships endure rough patches, it’s all part of the maturation process. Ultimately, their bond prevails.” Shimza acknowledged the reconciliation, preferring not to delve into specifics. “Our focus is on forging ahead.”
