Brazilian Woman Arrested at OR Tambo with R1.9 Million Worth of Cocaine
A 44-year-old Brazilian woman was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday afternoon for attempting to smuggle cocaine valued at R1.9 million into South Africa.
Concealed Cocaine Discovered
The woman had arrived from São Paulo, Brazil, and was apprehended by SAPS intelligence officers during routine operations, the South African Criminal Justice SystemSouth African Criminal Justice System.
The drugs were found wrapped around her upper body, a method often used by drug traffickers to evade detection.
“She faces a charge of drug trafficking and will appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate soon,” authorities stated.

A Repeat Incident in the Same Week
This arrest marks the second such incident at OR Tambo in less than a week. On Sunday, another Brazilian national—a 25-year-old male—was caught attempting to smuggle over three kilograms of cocaine valued at R1.8 million. Similar to the recent arrest, the cocaine was wrapped around his torso.
“Police operationalised intelligence and arrested the Brazilian national at OR Tambo International Airport for drug trafficking,” said National police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk.
Authorities Issue a Warning to Traffickers
National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized the ongoing efforts of South African authorities to combat drug smuggling.
“OR Tambo International Airport police continue to sniff out drug traffickers as they land, sending out a strong message that SA is not a playground for drug peddlers,” she said.
Both suspects are expected to face charges of drug trafficking as investigations continue.
