A 14-year-old Grade 8 pupil from Ravensmead High School in Cape Town was killed in a shooting while walking to school on Tuesday morning.
The attack left two other teenagers, aged 15 and 17, injured, along with a 55-year-old man caught in the crossfire.
Grade 8 Pupil Killed In Cape Town School Shooting
The incident occurred on Donnegal Street in Ravensmead. Daily Sun reported that gunmen reportedly opened fire at random, with no specific targets.
“These people just opened fire at the pupils who were walking to school. The shooters didn’t go close to them,” a resident said.
Western Cape Department of Education spokeswoman Bronagh Hammond confirmed the tragedy and highlighted its impact on the school.
“Sadly, I can confirm that a Grade 8 pupil from Ravensmead High School was shot and sadly killed while travelling to school. Two other individuals were also shot and are treated for injuries. Two other individuals are allegedly not pupils,” Hammond said.
Chaos erupted at St Andrews Secondary School, located nearby, after the shooters fled through its grounds as pupils entered the gates. Parents scrambled to collect their children, and schools in the area went into lockdown.
“The alleged perpetrators then fled into the grounds of St Andrews Secondary School as pupils were entering the school gates. This caused panic among pupils. Some fled the school grounds,” Hammond added.
Despite the disruption, matric exams proceeded under heightened security.
“The Western Cape Education Department’s National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination team was also alerted immediately,” Hammond said.
Counselling services and refreshments were provided for affected pupils.
