Multi-award-winning rapper Cassper Nyovest has shared a touching story about his journey from Mahikeng to Johannesburg to pursue his dream.
The Early Days Full Of Fire
Nyovest was born Refiloe Maele Phoolo in Mafikeng, North West. At the age of 12, he discovered his passion for music and began rapping. Despite failing his Grade 10 exams, Nyovest made a life-changing decision: he dropped out of school and moved to Johannesburg to pursue his musical career.
In a podcast episode two months back, Nyovest recalled that in primary school, a teacher told his parents that he was destined for the stage, not the classroom. This thought stayed with him and also inspired him to quit school and focus on music full-time.
Before becoming a household name, Cassper Nyovest participated in dance competitions, including winning an episode of Jika Majika. His talent and determination caught the attention of fans and industry insiders alike.
Years later, the late hip-hop legend HHP took and mentored him under his wing. Nyovest also disclosed that HHP made him a supporting act at his shows, so he hones his craft.
Nyovest’s 2014 debut studio album, Tsholofelo, produced hit singles like “Gusheshe” and “Doc Shebeleza,” catapulting him into the spotlight.
