Chicco Twala’s Son Longwe Remanded in Custody
It never rains but pours for Longwe Twala as he has been remanded in custody following his failure to attend a scheduled court hearing last month.
His arrest in Diepkloof on Tuesday was a result of his absence during the previous court session in October.
Upon his appearance at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Longwe explained that his absence was due to illness. However, he did not provide a medical certificate to support his claim.
Longwe Twala Theft Case and Legal Fallout
The legal proceedings stem from a theft case filed by Chicco Twala in September, after he discovered that his recording equipment was missing from his studio. The producer accused Longwe of stealing the items while he was out of the country. Chicco reported the theft, and a case was opened involving Longwe and his brother, Sello.
While Sello was cleared of any involvement in the crime due to insufficient evidence, Longwe now faces serious charges, including theft and contempt of court. The studio equipment in question is valued at R200,000, according to Chicco.
Contempt of Court Allegations
During his court appearance, Longwe faced contempt of court charges. According to Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), anyone who misses a court appearance must provide a valid explanation. In this case, Longwe’s failure to provide a proper explanation led to the postponement of his case, which will now be heard on December 4, Sunday World reveals.
Bail Application and State Opposition
Longwe has the right to apply for bail, but the NPA is expected to oppose his release. The prosecution has expressed concerns about Longwe’s reliability, citing his failure to adhere to court proceedings in the past. Mjonondwane stated,
“He has already shown that he cannot be trusted,” which will likely influence the court’s decision on whether or not he will be granted bail.
Next Steps and Investigation
The case has been postponed to allow further investigation into Longwe’s absence and to verify the details of his illness. The investigating officer is expected to submit an affidavit confirming Longwe’s address and providing more information regarding his health condition.
