However, yesterday the country received one million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, AstraZeneca, from India.

The batch of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport in full view of President Cyril Ramaphosa and other state dignitaries.

“Well we are delighted the vaccines are here now the one million and the Minister will outline everything after we have received them. This marks a major milestone in our fight against the Coronavirus pandemic as we receive our first consignment of the vaccine. This batch will benefit our healthcare workers who have been at the forefront of keeping us all safe.

Now that the vaccines have arrived they will be tested to confirm that their integrity has been maintained after testing they will be distributed to our health workers across the country as they are at the forefront of fighting this virus. We will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to make sure that enough vaccine doses are secured to reach population immunity in our country,” said Ramaphosa.

The first one million shots of the vaccine will be used to inoculate healthcare workers. The country has seen a big surge in infections in January driven by a new, more contagious variant of the virus called 501Y.V2. South Africa has been the worst hit on the African continent and has reported the most cases and fatalities so far.
