Democratic Alliance President John Steenhuisen Returns to School After 30 Years, Minister to Study at UNISA
Minister of Agriculture and Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has announced plans to resume his academic journey in 2025, more than three decades after initially leaving his studies.
In a video posted on social media, Steenhuisen confirmed his enrollment at UNISA, where he intends to pursue a range of subjects geared toward advancing his skills in governance and leadership.

Long-Awaited Academic Pursuit
While John Steenhuisen currently holds a Senior Certificate (Matric) as his highest academic qualification, he has expressed a strong desire to pursue further studies in areas such as management, public policy, governance, and change management. Speaking on his goals, he stated,
“Now, holding a key office in government, there are certain skills that I would like to acquire that would help me do my job better.
And Unisa gives me the flexibility to work and study. Therefore, I intend to continue with my qualification”.
Steenhuisen praised UNISA for providing the flexibility he needs to balance both his studies and work responsibilities.
Financial Hurdles Led to Early University Exit
Steenhuisen’s academic qualifications have often been a point of discussion, with critics highlighting his lack of a university degree. He initially began a BA in Politics but had to abandon his studies due to financial challenges and work demands.
Despite these setbacks, Steenhuisen showcased a natural aptitude for academic excellence. In 2018, he shared certificates of merit on social media, reflecting distinctions he achieved in political modules during his brief university stint.
“I did rather well,” he tweeted, defending his commitment to learning and self-improvement.
Rising from Ward Councillor to DA Leader
After completing school in 1993, Steenhuisen entered the political arena at the age of 22 as a ward councillor. His career in politics accelerated, leading to his appointment as DA leader in 2019.
