DJ Sbu Retires Holding World’s Longest Running Radio Show Record

After decades of an illustrious career and holding the record for the world’s longest-running radio show – spanning for over 20 years – DJ Sbu has finally dropped the mic.

The DJ whose real name is Sbusiso Leope is retiring from the airwaves after a two-decade long career on his radio, Massiv Metro.

He founded Massiv Metro after previously working with Metro FM, YFM and Ukhozi FM.

He says he already had plans of exiting airwaves a while ago but “he wanted to go out with a bang.”

“This was the way of challenging myself and my team.

I wanted to go out with a big achievement and thought what better way than a world record. We also used it to raise funds,” he said.

“We raised money for a homeless shelter in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni called Siyazigabisa Home of Hope.

We did 216 hours on radio, which is about nine days of non-stop music radio,” he added.

Talking about his next step after radio, Sbu said he was stepping away from the mic to focus on mentoring new talent.

He is also going back to music and starting a new record label.

” I’ll be exploring things I haven’t done in music before. I had a successful career but the era has changed. I did music before social media and the Internet were bad. Now it’s a new generation and times. The first project is my album Home Coming: The African Odyssey, that I dropped two weeks ago.”
