DJ Sumbody’s Business Partner Kagiso Setsetse Seeks Safety In Dubai Following Threats From A Gang Leader

DJ Sumbody’s business partner Kagiso Setsetse, recently revealed the motivations behind his decision to leave the country and move to Dubai with his family.

In an interview with Sunday World recently, Setsetse disclosed that he embarked on a journey to Dubai with his wife and three sons on April 9, originally planning to return to South Africa on April 20.

However, due to unsettling circumstances, Setsetse and his family made the difficult choice to remain in Dubai.

On April 10, they received death threats from an alleged Cape Town gang leader, which prompted their decision to stay away from South Africa for their own safety.

“I did not take it lightly as I have heard horrifying stories about him, some of which he told me himself. Losing my business partner in that dreadful manner created a lot of trauma and anxiety for my family and I.

“It is no secret that businessmen are not safe in our country, from being kidnapped to being brutally killed,” he said.

According to Setsetse, he was initially introduced to the gang leader by DJ Sumbody in 2019 with the intention of hiring him to oversee the security of their Ayepyep branch in Cape Town.

At the time of their introduction, the gang leader presented himself as a responsible family man who would safeguard their business from any potential gang-related threats.

However, it soon became apparent that the gang leader expected a protection fee from Setsetse and DJ Sumbody in exchange for his services.

“The gang leader said that we were not going to open the outlet unless he was there. He later brought a security company that provided security services for the business. He later insisted his wife should help to run the business because we lived in Gauteng,” he said.

He said the two paid the gang leader’s wife and the security company close to half a million rands a month. After working with the wife, he then allegedly started to threaten them by forcing his way into the business and later demanded they give him shares but they refused.

“A week later we believe he sent people to try and disturb the operations of the business as a threat, and due to these threats, we realised there was nothing we could do. We asked him to pay for the shares and he refused. He instructed us that we should issue his mother-in-law with a share certificate.

“We issued the share certificate but decided against it before we could sign or register it at the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission.”

Early in April, the gang leader threatened me and tried to shut down Ayepyep Cape Town by sending his alleged gangster employee to threaten us.

“The gang leader’s wife instructed his right-hand man to remove all the bank speed points from Ayepyep Cape Town and replaced them with her cousin’s business speed points where all the funds where transferred to her cousin’s account.

Following the concerning events, Setsetse took swift action by seeking legal intervention from the Western Cape High Court.

He obtained a court order that directed the gang leader and other relevant parties to return the 14-speed points that were in their possession. Additionally, the order compelled the gang leader’s associate to transfer funds back into the nightclub’s account.

As part of the court order, the gang leader’s wife was required to provide a comprehensive breakdown of all monetary transactions during April 2023. This included presenting evidence of payments made and relevant supporting documents.

However, despite the legal proceedings, the court decided to lift the suspension imposed on the gang leader’s wife, thereby allowing her to resume her duties as the general manager of the establishment.

The court emphasized that she should fulfill her managerial responsibilities.

Setsetse further shared that when he informed the gang leader of his intention to involve the media in the matter, the gang leader seemingly dismissed any concerns.

He claimed to be untroubled, asserting that he had influential connections within law enforcement agencies such as the Hawks and the police, suggesting that he was immune to any consequences or repercussions.
