Double Payment Whirlwind: Arthur Mafokate Fingered In Another Fraud Scandal
In a shocking revelation, the Democratic Alliance (DA) challenges the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation over double dipping allegations involving the renowned musician Arthur Mafokate’s company, 999 Music.
The controversy centers around the New Year’s Eve Party hosted in 2015, featuring a star-studded lineup of top acts, including Black Coffee and Mafikizolo.
DA’s Investigation Exposes Payment Discrepancies
Kingsol Chabalala, a Member of the Provincial Legislature and DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, leads the investigation into 999 Music’s payment. It was discovered that the company received a substantial sum of one million rand directly from the department, despite not having a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Johannesburg.
Additionally, the City of Johannesburg paid the entertainment company a substantial amount of R711,000 for the same service rendered during the 2015/2016 financial year, Zimoja reveals.
Calls for Accountability and Repayment
The DA is demanding a thorough investigation into 999 Music’s financial affairs to determine the reasons behind the double payment.
Kingsol Chabalala expresses concern over the company receiving compensation twice for the same service, stating that these funds could have been used for essential community facilities and heritage sites.
“An investigation must be launched into 999 Music to determine why this company was paid twice for the same service rendered during the 2015/2016 financial year,” Kingsol Chabalala said.
The DA has since called on Arthur Mafokate’s company to pay back the money paid to him by the department.
Lotteries Fund Fraud Scandal
In a separate legal battle, Arthur Mafokate was recently implicated in the Lotteries Fund fraud scandal.
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) seizes five of his properties following an investigation into five NGOs allegedly linked to Arthur Mafokate, receiving grant funding of about R56.3 million for various projects.
