Tragic Christmas Day Incident at Fish Hoek Beach: Drunk Man Dies After Ignoring Lifeguards’ Warnings
In a tragic incident on Christmas Day, a 36-year-old man died at Fish Hoek Beach after ignoring warnings from lifeguards and diving into the water while suspected to be drunk.
The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m., when the man attempted to dive into the water from rocks at Jagers Walk, despite being advised against it by lifeguards who suspected he was intoxicated.

Lifeguards’ Efforts to Save the Man
The lifeguards noticed that the man had not resurfaced after jumping into the water. They immediately began searching for him and found him submerged.
According to the DailySun, the lifeguards quickly retrieved the man from the water and performed CPR, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Warning About Alcohol on the Beaches
City of Cape Town MMC for Safety and Security, Jean-Pierre Smith, emphasized the dangers of alcohol near water, stating, “Booze and water don’t mix.”
He reiterated that lifeguards had warned the man about the risks of diving into a shallow area while intoxicated, but he refused to heed the advice.
Smith also addressed the ongoing issue of alcohol at beaches, mentioning that authorities are using long-range CCTV and drones to catch offenders. He urged beachgoers to enjoy the beaches responsibly, without bringing alcohol onto the premises.
NSRI Confirms Death and Details of the Incident
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesman Craig Lambinon confirmed the details of the tragic event, identifying the deceased as a 36-year-old man.
He explained that lifeguards had responded quickly after the man failed to resurface and had worked to save him, but unfortunately, they were unable to revive him.
