A 30-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly choking his mother to death in her home in Lower Gxulu, Keiskammahoek, Eastern Cape.

The community has been left in shock after the horrific incident, which took place on Wednesday, 16 October.

Family spokesperson Petros Majola revealed that the 56-year-old woman, Nontsikelelo Maweza (56), had strangulation marks on her neck and other bruises on her body.

Nontsikelelo was abused by her child, but she loved him so much. On Wednesday, 16 October, she was heard screaming in her house,” Majola said.

Police were called to the scene, but it was too late to save her. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is yet to reveal the reason the 30-year-old man strangled his mother until she died.

Her son was arrested for the alleged offence,” Majola confirmed.

Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, the police spokesperson, told The Daily Sun that neighbours had alerted authorities after hearing Nontsikelelo’s screams.

It’s alleged that the deceased was heard by neighbors screaming and alerted the police,” Mawisa said.

When officers arrived, they found her lifeless body in her home.

The suspect was not present when police arrived but later turned himself in at the Keiskammahoek police station on Thursday, 17 October. He was arrested and charged with the grisly murder of his mother.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mawisa added:

He later handed himself to the police in Keiskamahoek on Thursday, 17 October, and was arrested and charged with murder.

The suspect made his first appearance at the Keiskammahoek Magistrates Court on Monday, 21 October. The case has been postponed to Monday, 28 October, for a formal bail application.

The tragic killing has stunned the community, who did not expect such a violent act from the woman’s own son. The investigation is ongoing.
