The Details: EFF Councillor Gunned Down During Violent Protest
The victim, Moshe Mphahlele, was allegedly caught in the crossfire as Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers attempted to disperse protesters. Eyewitness accounts paint a grisly scene – Mphahlele was first shot while sitting down, and then hit again as he tried to flee.
Speaking to Daily Sun, the witness criticised the use of live ammunition to disperse the protesters, expressing hope that justice would be served.
“We want the law to take its course, because there was no need for them to use the force they used, they have rubber bullets and teargas, using a gun shows that the aim was to shoot to kill,” said the witness.

Mourning a ‘Committed Public Servant’
The Speaker of the City of Johannesburg, Margaret Arnolds, described the incident as a tragic loss, calling Mphahlele a “committed public servant” whose life was “senselessly cut short.” She confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of Mphahlele’s untimely death was underway.
“It’s imperative that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted to ensure that justice is served, and that the truth is brought to light,” Arnolds said.
She extended her deepest condolences to Mphahlele’s family, friends, and colleagues, saying,
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound loss. Furthermore, the Speaker wishes to extend heartfelt sympathies and support to the EFF Caucus in the City of Johannesburg Council. Losing a colleague and a friend in such a manner is undoubtedly a profound and challenging experience. In these moments of grief, it’s crucial for all members of the council and the broader community to come together, uphold the values of justice, and work towards a peaceful and respectful resolution.”

JMPD Remains Tightlipped As SAPS Investigates Incident
When contacted for comment, JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla remained tight-lipped, stating that the matter is part of an ongoing investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“The matter is being investigated by the SAPS, we as the JMPD do not have anything information about these issues, we will wait for the investigation to be completed,” he said.
In addition to being a councillor, Mphahlele served as the EFF’s deputy secretary in Joburg.
