Move over Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk is the world’s newest billionaire.
Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk just became the richest person in the world, with a net worth of more than $185 billion. He takes the top spot from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who has held it since 2017.
According to CNBC, due to Thursday’s increase in Tesla’s share price, pushed Musk past Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Bezos has been the richest person since 2017 and is currently worth about $184 billion. In 2020, Bezos benefitted from the coronavirus pandemic through Amazon. The company saw an increase in demand for both its online store and cloud computing services.
However, he gave a 4% stake in the business to his ex-wife MacKenzie Scott after they split. This in turn helped Musk overtake him. Musk’s car company hit $750 billion for the first time on Wednesday. Tesla is now worth more than Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, GM, and Ford combined, BBC.com reports.
This milestone marks a fruitful twelve months for Musk who started 2020 worth about $27 billion. Tesla’s rocketing share price has increased by more than 743% over the past year. This has increased his net worth to more than $150 billion, according to the news site. Musk’s wealth surge over the past year marks the fastest rise to the top of the rich list in history.
Elon Musk passed Warren Buffett in July to become the seventh-richest person. In November, Musk raced past Bill Gates to become the second-richest person. Musk has gained more wealth over the past 12 months than Bill Gates’ entire net worth of $132 billion.
