Tragedy Strikes as Fire Tears Through Johannesburg Building, Claiming 73 Lives
In a tragic incident, a fire broke out in a five-storey building in central Johannesburg, South Africa, resulting in the death of at least 73 people.
The building, described as an “informal settlement,” was home to hundreds of homeless individuals seeking accommodation.
The fire broke out in the middle of the night, and emergency services have reported that the number of fatalities may rise further as more people could be trapped inside.
The Fire and Rescue Operation
The fire in the multi-story building started in the early hours of the morning, causing extensive damage and claiming numerous lives. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to extinguish the flames and rescue survivors.
However, the operation has been challenging due to obstructions within the building, hindering the escape of occupants.
Firefighters have been going from floor to floor, working their way through the building. As of 9 am, they had only covered three of the building’s five storeys.

The Casualties and Injuries
The fire has resulted in a significant loss of life, with at least 73 people confirmed dead. Among the victims are seven children, the youngest being just one year old.
Additionally, dozens of people have been injured and have been taken to local hospitals for treatment, with some suffering from smoke inhalation, News24 reveals.
