Mzansi Fuming as Floyd Mayweather Snubs South Africa, Prefers Zimbabwe on Instagram
South Africans are up in arms over retired American boxer Floyd Mayweather’s failure to post any snapshots of himself in their country on his Instagram account.
Upon arriving at Lanseria Airport on Saturday, the boxing legend received a warm welcome from his legion of South African fans and boxing enthusiasts, following a brief visit to Zimbabwe.
Why Did He Visit South Africa?
Mayweather’s visit to South Africa was part of his Motherland Tour, which concluded on Sunday, July 16, after commencing a day earlier. The tour began in neighbouring Harare, Zimbabwe, on July 13 and 14.
As part of the tour, Mayweather organized an extravagant charity dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday night, July 15, to honour legendary South African boxers. The dinner had a fashion theme: “Go black or don’t bother.” It was attended by the crème de la crème of South African entertainment, sports, and politics.
Tickets for the dinner were available to the public, ranging from R2,500 to R45,000, and the purpose was to raise funds for boxing youth in South Africa. However, despite the success of Floyd “Money” Mayweather Gala Dinner, there was no auction as originally planned to assist the underprivileged.
In a ceremony hosted by Metro FM DJ Tbo Touch and actress Pearl Thusi, Mayweather presented awards to boxing legends such as Dingaan “The Rose of Soweto” Thobela, Baby Jake Matlala, Brian Mitchell, and his former South African rival, Phillip Ndou, whom he fought on November 1, 2003. Although Mayweather emerged victorious against Ndou, he considers him one of his most formidable opponents in the ring.
Floyd Mayweather Snubs South Africa
After departing South Africa, Mayweather landed in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and promptly shared pictures of himself relaxing on a hotel balcony, savouring expensive champagne while admiring the view. This triggered notable South African personalities and ordinary citizens, who expressed their disappointment in the comments section, questioning Mayweather’s failure to share any pictures of his time in South Africa. Interestingly, Mayweather did share video footage of his experiences in Zimbabwe.
