Once a celebrated star, Lekoelea is said to be grappling with the reality of his past fame. He allegedly resorts to excessive drinking and frequently relives his football glory days. Friends in his hometown have noted his dependence on their sympathy and support, as he often recalls his achievements while engaging in self-destructive behaviours.
Lekoelea Avoiding Accountability For His Decisions
Once a revered midfielder who captivated fans with his skill and passion, Lekoelea has reportedly not come to terms with the choices that led to the end of his football career. Having joined the Orlando Pirates in 1995, where he remained for a decade, the former player is said to frequently boast about his on-field exploits while neglecting responsibility for his current situation.

According to a friend who wished to remain anonymous, Lekoelea, who started his professional journey at just 15 with Moroka Swallows, places much of the blame on the football world for his personal and financial downfall. “He’s constantly bragging about how talented he was, particularly during his prime at Orlando Pirates. But instead of taking responsibility, he now begs as though he never had a professional career,” the friend shared. “It’s sad to see how far he’s fallen.”
Frustration Among Locals
Residents in Sebokeng have reportedly grown weary of Lekoelea’s actions. They express frustration over his refusal to seek meaningful help and instead allow alcohol to consume him. “He expects us to feel pity for him, but he’s just throwing his life away,” remarked a local source.
Some believe that, instead of indulging in alcohol, Lekoelea could ask for a role within the Orlando Pirates organization, possibly coaching younger talent. His former teammate, Joseph “Dukuduku” Makhanya, now coaches the Pirates reserve team in the DStv Diski Challenge, serving as an example of how former players can find purpose post-retirement.
Lekoelea had once been given a significant opportunity to further his career abroad. At the age of 18, he was offered a position at Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven, where he would play alongside internationally renowned talents such as Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Ronaldo. However, Lekoelea left Holland prematurely, citing homesickness and difficulties adjusting to the language.

A Common Struggle Among Ex-Players
Lekoelea’s struggle is not an isolated case. Other former Bafana Bafana players have faced similar challenges after their football careers ended. One prominent example is former Orlando Pirates captain Mbulelo Mabizela, who, after a brief stint with Tottenham Hotspur, was dismissed from the team due to poor discipline and heavy drinking.
Another ex-player, Lerato Chabangu, also battles with alcohol dependency. When approached for comment, Chabangu replied abruptly, saying, “I don’t know who you are, who gave you this number,” before hanging up the phone.
