Struggles Behind the Spotlight

Darlington Michaels became a household name in South Africa after joining the cast of Isidingo in 1998, where he portrayed the flamboyant and ruthless mobster Georgie Zamdela, also known as Papa G.

Despite his contributions to the entertainment industry, Michaels has struggled to find work in recent years, leading to growing concerns about the welfare of South African actors once they fall out of the spotlight.

A former colleague who worked alongside Darlington Michaels in theatre disclosed that the actor had reached out a few weeks ago seeking help due to his deteriorating health.

The unnamed colleague shared that Michaels expressed frustration with the industry’s treatment of veteran actors, lamenting the lack of opportunities and financial security.

“It’s hard being an actor in this country. If anything happens to him, the government will only issue condolences instead of celebrating this man while he is still alive,” the source added.
