The controversy stems from documents shared by the department on social media.
On Tuesday, 20 August, the department disclosed that Chidimma’s mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman registered in 1982 in Tshwane and that her child is the one that was born in 2001.
“The child that was registered was Chidimma Adetshina. The information shared by the family of the lady whose ID was stolen in Tshwane matches the details contained in the department’s records,” the department stated.
This revelation has led to questions about whether Chidimma was born in 2001, as indicated by the department’s records, or if she was born earlier. The uncertainty has sparked widespread debate, particularly given the importance of age eligibility in beauty pageants like Miss South Africa.
Conflicting Reports on Age
Adding to the confusion, Sowetan reported that Chidimma is 23 years old and was born at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital to a Nigerian father and a mother of Mozambican descent. This claim contradicts the department’s findings, raising further doubts about her actual birth year.
