Former SABC News Anchor and Producer Collins Mashego Has Died

Collins Mashego, a former SABC news anchor and producer, has passed away at the age of 82.

The TV legend passed away peacefully at his home in Mamelodi Gardens on the morning of September 3, 2024.

Family Confirms Collins Mashego’s Death

The Mashego family confirmed the news in a statement seen by DailySun.

“The Mashego family is saddened to announce the passing of their father and South African television legend Collins Mashego. Mr Mashego worked at the SABC as an anchor and producer of various entertainment programmes including Lapologa, Dinaledi, Tshutshumakgale, Mathemalodi, and Diarora on TV2, CCTV, and later SABC1 & SABC2,” reads the statement.

Collins Mashego is survived by his son, Thabo Collins Jr., and his wife, Reneilwe Palesa, as well as his daughter, Prelly, and her husband, Scotch.

He also leaves behind three grandchildren, including TikTok sensation Oratile, known to many as Coachellarandy.

A Family of Legacy

Mashego was the father of the late Vinolia Mashego, affectionately known as “V-Mash,” who gained widespread fame in the 1990s as the host of the popular music show Jam Alley. Vinolia Mashego passed away in 2020, a loss that deeply affected her father.

In an earlier interview with Daily Sun, Collins Mashego expressed his sorrow over Vinolia’s death, stating,

She can never be replaced. We’ve lost the jewel of our family. When she was young, I used to say there would never be anyone like me in terms of personality and charisma, but she proved me wrong. She did more than I ever did.”

His death comes as Mzansi is mourning the death of veteran broadcaster Thabiso Sikwane and renowned poet and actress Jessica Mbangeni. They both passed away on Saturday, 31st August.
