Zahara’s family has taken a significant step by initiating a police case into her untimely death. The inquest docket was officially opened at the Roodepoort police station following the family’s deep-seated suspicions of foul play.
Inquest Case Details
Zahara, whose real name is Bulelwa Mkutukana, breathed her last at Olievedale Netcare Hospital in Johannesburg on December 11, 2023, at the age of 36. The inquest was initiated by Zahara’s brother, Junior Mkutukana, on the same day she passed away. This move comes after she had been hospitalized for several days at the private facility.
The inquest statement, recorded by Constable Modupe and verified by Warrant Officer Netshiunda, indicates: “The complainant, Mr Mkutukana, alleged that on 2023-12-11 at about 12:00, he was at Roodepoort when Bulelwa Mkutukana complained of stomach pains. She was taken to Olievedale Netcare Hospital and was declared dead (sic).”

Speculations regarding health problems, including liver-related complications and pre-diabetes, circulated both before and after Zahara’s demise. However, the award-winning artist’s family dismisses these claims, prompting the decision to launch the inquest to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Suspected Poisoning
Sunday World has learned that Zahara’s family entertains suspicions that the singer might have been intentionally poisoned by adversaries. These suspicions gained traction due to conflicting preliminary autopsy reports received by the family shortly after the passing of the ‘Loliwe’ hitmaker.

Conflicting Autopsy Reports
One autopsy report suggests that Zahara succumbed to “natural causes,” while another states that her cause of death is “under investigation.” When questioned about the case, Zahara’s manager, Oyama Dyosiba, claimed no knowledge and directed inquiries to the late singer’s uncle and family spokesperson, Nkosi Mkutukana.
Nkosi, however, feigned ignorance, stating, “Which case are you talking about? We did not open any inquest at Roodepoort. I have no knowledge of this.”
Police Confirmation
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo has confirmed the registration of an inquest docket for investigation. “We can confirm that an inquest docket has been registered for investigation,” he stated.
Zahara’s final resting place will be in her hometown of Phumlani in the Eastern Cape, with the funeral scheduled for Saturday.
