Free State Extortionists Shoot Each Other in Fight Over Stolen Money

Free State police have arrested a man following a dramatic turn of events where two  extortionists reportedly shot each other during a dispute over stolen money.

The incident has left one suspect hospitalized under police guard, while the other remains at large.

Kidnapping and Extortion Plot Unveiled

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli disclosed that the two suspects hijacked and kidnapped a victim along with his friend in Botshabelo, a township outside Bloemfontein, two weeks ago, Zimoja reveals.

The suspects allegedly held the victim hostage at a house in Section A, forcing him to hand over a significant amount of money.

The victim reported the ordeal to the Selosesha police, opening cases of carjacking, kidnapping, and extortion. Investigations later revealed that the two suspects had a violent fallout over the extorted money, leading them to shoot each other,” Kareli explained.

Arrest and Hospitalization

On 26 November 2024, police received a tip-off about one of the suspects driving a white Toyota Corolla with Lesotho registration plates. Acting on the lead, the authorities apprehended the suspect on Friday for an unrelated domestic violence charge.

The suspect, who had sustained injuries from the earlier altercation with his accomplice, was hospitalized and is now under police guard. Kareli confirmed that additional charges, including carjacking, kidnapping, and extortion, will be brought against him.

Search for the Second Suspect Continues

The second suspect involved in the incident is still on the run. Authorities are intensifying their search efforts to locate him and bring him to justice.

Police Prioritize Extortion Cases

Free State Provincial Police Commissioner General Babeile Motswenyane reaffirmed the province’s commitment to combating extortion-related crimes.

We are strengthening efforts to address such cases and ensure they receive the priority attention they deserve,” Motswenyane stated.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Selosesha Magistrates Court today.
