Fleurs went to a petrol station along 14th Avenue in Honeydew, Johannesburg, and he parked his red VW Golf 8 GTi to refuel. Two men driving a BMW then approached him, hoisting a gun, and ordered him out of the GTi.

Lt-Col Masondo added:

“The men were travelling in a white BMW 1 Series. The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice.”

After the senseless shooting, members of the public called an ambulance, which rushed Fleurs to a medical centre close by. However, he succumbed to the gunshot injuries and died.

MDN News reported that Gauteng police are not ruling out the possibility that the killing of Luke Fleurs was a hit. They further suspect that the men staged the carjacking to hide the assassination. This is because even after the footballer had complied and gotten out of his car, the men still shot and killed him.

Social media users expressed their sentiments about this.

Lassy:

“He was already out of the car, but they still shot him. It was a hit. The big question should be, who ordered it and why?”

Austine:

“It definitely was an assassination. It can’t be that it’s because of the car that it’s a Golf 8 GTi. They had traced his movements, and there was someone who either didn’t like his progress, or it was a personal conflict between people.”

Becko:

“South Africa needs capital punishment.”

Mtaka:

“Just get CCTV footage and trace the cars, arrest the criminals and give the 6 life sentences.”

Mahlombe:

“Can they please give the docket to #Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to investigate or handle the matter?”
