Grade 10 Student Delivers At School
On 7 September 2023 , she asked her teacher to go to the restroom because of a runny tummy and they let her. She felt that her baby was on the way, but she never showed any signs of labour pains.
A learner who refused to be named recounted the eerie incident to Zimoja:
“Everybody at school knew that she was heavily pregnant and we were expecting her to give birth at anytime. We were surprised when she took almost two hours in the toilet until our class teacher asked us to go and check on her. We found her mopping a lot of blood and she claimed that she was on her period and she didn’t have her pads.”
The startled students left the toilet and rushed to tell the Principal of the school what they had just witnessed. The Principal approached the school’s female teachers to attend to her and they were too shaken to cooperate.

When the learner left the toilet, he interrogated her and she stuck to the pads. The principal then moved to call the learner’s parents for an urgent meeting.
Upon further probing, the Grade 10 student confessed that she had indeed given birth and tossed away the baby in the pit latrine. She added that she chose this course because she was scared of letting her teachers know she was about to deliver.
The shaken parents spirited off to the toilet and found the newborn baby still alive.
Mkhanyakude Police Spokesperson Captain Sibusiso Mkhize confirmed the incident to Zimoja:
“The mother and the baby are both being taken care of at the nearby hospital.”
