Police have retrieved the CCTV footage that shows the tragic moment Kaizer Chiefs footballer Luke Fleurs was shot dead in a carjacking incident.
Fleurs was shot on 3 April 2024 while filling up his car at a fuel station in Florida, Roodepoort, Johannesburg. The suspects took off with his red VW Golf 8 GTi.
The South Africa Police Service confirmed that the carjacker killed Fleurs at around 8:30 pm on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and 14th Avenue. They now have the CCTV footage of the shooting, and Fleurs fought with the robbers before they shot him.
CCTV Footage Shows The Moment Luke Fleurs Was Shot Dead
A close source told Sunday World that the footballer had two young passengers in his car. He drove to the fuel station to refill, and the suspects, who had a BMW 1 series, trailed him there. There were four; two followed him, and two remained in the car. The robbers all donned balaclavas and caps.
The source added:
“They [four people in BMW] first drove past the petrol station but drove back into the station and parked next to his car. They went to the VW Golf and opened the rear doors. Two young boys in Fleurs’ car got out of the vehicle and ran towards the back of the petrol station to hide. They then pulled Fleurs out of his car, and he ran towards the petrol station shop. The two hijackers got into his car, and as they were about to drive off with Fleurs’ car, he ran towards it and fought those hijackers.
“He ran to his car, grabbed the door, and tried to remove the hijacker, who was in the driver’s seat. He fought them and tried to drive his car, almost knocking into the petrol station’s walls. During the scuffle, Fleurs yelled, ‘No malome, you cannot do this,’ to the hijacker in the driver’s seat. They overpowered him, and one of them shot him at close range in the left side of his chest.”
Police And The Fuel Station Speak On The Video
The police are investigating the case on charges of murder and car hijacking. They declined to comment on the CCTV footage, saying it would compromise the investigation.
Shell Downstream South Africa spokesperson Pam Ntaka confirmed they are cooperating with the police and cannot reveal information on the video. She added that there were four petrol attendants, one cashier, and one staff member at the petrol station. None of them sustained injuries. The two young boys who fled from Fleurs’ car were also safe.
