The Thabo Mbeki Foundation has taken to social media to release a statement on the former president’s health, saying he is in good health despite death rumours.
This follows after some social media users spread rumours that Thabo Mbeki had died after being rushed to the hospital.
The reports led to Thabo Mbeki’s Wikipedia page being updated and the former president erroneously being stated as deceased as of today.

Thabo Mbeki Foundation releases a statement.
The foundation shared a media statement on their social media page to set the record straight on Mbeki’s health.
The Thabo Mbeki Foundation is aware of recent, unfounded reports circulating on social regarding the health of the Patron of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, President Thabo Mbeki.
They noted that they were aware of the false rumours circulating regarding the former president’s health.
‘We caterogically deny these reports and wish to assure the public that President Mbeki is in good health.’
The statement went on to urge individuals and organizations to stop spreading misinformation at this time when it can spread quickly.
Thabo Mbeki’s Death Hoax
Fake news reports had circulated earlier that Former President Thabo Mbeki was rushed to the hospital yesterday. It was reported that the former president died today, on the 3rd of January 2024.

This is not the first time that false rumours regarding Thabo Mbeki’s death have circulated. In 2021, news broke out that the former president had succumbed to COVID-19.
Mbeki served as the president of South Africa from 1999 to 2008, when he resigned after his party, the ANC, requested his resignation. He was the second president of South Africa after Nelson Mandela.
