South African singer-songwriter Holly Rey, known for her vibrant music and powerful voice, has recently shared a deeply personal story about battling kidney failure.
As a Type 1 Diabetic, Holly has faced numerous challenges, but her recent battle with kidney failure has been one of the most difficult. In a heartfelt message to her fans, she opened up about her journey, hoping to inspire and support others facing similar health issues.
Holly Rey Reveals Suffering From Diabetes and Kidney Failure
In December, Holly experienced a severe health scare that led to her hospitalization. She was suffering from extreme dehydration, which began to take a toll on her kidneys.
“My kidney function dropped to dangerously low levels, and I was hospitalized for about a week,” Holly revealed.
Initially, it seemed like the issue was solely due to dehydration and fatigue, but things took a turn for the worse in January.
She was hospitalized again, this time with renal failure.

“My kidney function was so low that doctors discussed the possibility of dialysis and even a transplant,” Holly shared.
This period was incredibly frightening for her, as the cause of her sudden kidney failure remained unclear.
A Mysterious Illness
Holly expressed her confusion and fear during this time.
“I’ve always managed my diabetes well, and kidney failure in diabetics typically occurs much later in life. None of this made sense to me,” she explained.
After undergoing a series of extensive tests, her medical team diagnosed her with an acute kidney injury. This meant that her body would need significant time to heal and recover.
Additionally, Holly experienced high blood pressure, which her doctors linked directly to her kidney failure. The singer described the physical toll this took on her.
“I’ve been feeling utterly exhausted and unable to perform even the simplest tasks. At times, I couldn’t even shower by myself because I was so tired and out of breath,” she admitted.

Adapting to a New Reality
As part of her treatment plan, Holly has been permanently placed on an insulin pump to manage her diabetes better. This device has been a game-changer for her, allowing her to maintain more stable blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of further complications.
“The insulin pump has made a significant difference in my daily life. It’s helped me regain some control over my health,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Holly remains optimistic and determined to share her story.
“I want to use my experience to help others who might be going through similar struggles. If my journey can offer even a little bit of hope or guidance, then it’s worth it,” she expressed.
