Tyla Faces Backlash for Supporting Former Miss SA Contestant Chidimma Adetshina

Tyla’s Tweet Sparks Outrage

South African music sensation Tyla is under fire after voicing her support for former Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina. Chidimma withdrew from the pageant amid reports that her mother is being investigated for identity theft and fraud. Tyla took to X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, accusing South Africans of bullying the contestant.

“I will always stand with South Africa, I just feel regardless of the opinions… She was bullied and that’s what I don’t stand for,” Tyla wrote in one post.

In a previous message, she expressed her disappointment over the situation, saying,

“Disappointed that this happened to her, but wish you all the best girl. Kill it!!!! ♥️♥️”

South Africans React

Tyla’s comments did not sit well with many South Africans, who were quick to call her out on social media. They accused the singer of being out of touch and criticised her for seemingly overlooking the serious allegations against Chidimma’s mother.

One Twitter user, ChrisExcel, expressed his frustration, saying,

“We supported you when Nigerians bullied you. We supported you when Americans bullied you about your identity crisis. And this is how you thank us?”

Another user, Thato Yabi, advised the singer,

“It’s okay not to have opinions about every topic. It’s okay to keep quiet sometimes.”

Accusations of Seeking Approval

Some critics went further, accusing Tyla of trying to win favour with Nigerians. Ntokozo Masuku tweeted,

“She’s begging to be loved by Nigerians.”

Others were annoyed that she did not address the serious allegations of identity fraud that led to Chidimma’s withdrawal. One user, Latest News, wrote,

“Her tweeting about this without even including the important details of how Chidimma’s mother committed identity fraud for the entire 23 years reiterates the false narrative that she withdrew because of the ‘bullying’.”

Tyla has yet to respond to the backlash, but it’s clear that her attempt to stand up for Chidimma has only ignited further controversy.
