The founder of the newly formed MK Party (MKP), Jabulani Khumalo, has urged the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to disassociate former president Jacob Zuma from the party’s image and its potential parliamentary members list.
“Given the circumstances, I urge the Electoral Commission to promptly remove Mr. Zuma’s name as the ‘face’ of MKP,” Khumalo stated in the letter. “Furthermore, he should be immediately ousted as the president of MKP, as both roles have been acquired through deceitful and unlawful means.”
Zuma currently tops the MKP’s list of candidates for the National Assembly.
Jabulani Khumalo Expelled From The Party
This move by Khumalo appears to be a response to his recent expulsion from the party by Zuma. The MKP cited intelligence reports questioning Khumalo’s conduct as the basis for his expulsion.
Khumalo has retaliated by petitioning the IEC to remove Zuma from its records. Additionally, he has informed Zuma of his precautionary suspension due to alleged “multiple acts of misconduct.”

In a separate letter to Zuma, Khumalo stated, “Your actions have tarnished the reputation of the MKP and have caused confusion among the public and our members. Specifically, your attempt to suspend me as party president was conducted without adhering to the party’s constitutional procedures.”

Background Details
- Khumalo registered the MKP on September 3, 2023.
- Zuma’s involvement was initially limited to consultations and fundraising.
- It was understood during consultations that Zuma would support the election campaign but not become a party member.
- Zuma is not part of the interim leadership structure of the MKP.
- Speculations regarding Zuma’s attempt to hijack the party were dismissed by Khumalo.
On April 23rd, Khumalo recounted being summoned to a meeting by non-executive committee members who were active within the MKP. During this meeting, Zuma announced Khumalo’s removal as party president, declaring himself as the new president.
“At this gathering, a falsified letter was drafted, stating my removal from the list of candidates and Zuma’s appointment as MKP’s face and president,” Khumalo explained.
“I promptly informed the Electoral Commission that Zuma would represent the party’s face, but at no point did I endorse him as party president.”
Khumalo emphasized to the IEC that the MKP’s leadership will take swift actions to address Zuma’s misconduct.
