Jozi Reunion Plans Hit a Snag as Da L.E.S Suffers Stroke
Hip-hop fans across South Africa were eagerly anticipating a reunion of the iconic group Jozi at this year’s Made in Mzansi Festival, set to take place on 28 and 29 September 2024 at Freedom Park in Tshwane.
However, the group’s long-awaited comeback has been put on hold following the news that group member Da L.E.S, born Lesley Mampe, recently suffered a stroke.

A Decade Apart and a Reunion in Sight
Jozi, a prominent group in the South African hip-hop scene, is composed of Ishmael (Ish), Da L.E.S, and Bongani Fassie (Bongz). The group was also originally comprised of Crazy Lu (Luther Yakanawa Cohen), who tragically passed away after a short illness.
According to Zimoja, despite their rocky history, the remaining members had put their differences aside in preparation for a surprise performance at the festival, which features three stages, over 50 performing artists, art exhibitions, a film festival, and food and craft markets.
The group, which split a decade ago amid disputes, including a reported financial disagreement with Muthaland label boss Lance Stehr, was on the verge of a major comeback.
Bongani Fassie had distanced himself from the group, and Crazy Lu had moved overseas before his passing. Despite these challenges, Da L.E.S and Ishmael continued to carry the Jozi banner.

Prayers and Hope for Da Les Full Recovery
Da Les remains hospitalized, and his condition has cast uncertainty over the planned reunion. The same close friend expressed concern, saying,
“He still needs prayers, and his family is hoping he makes a full recovery.”
