Kabisi Moroka’s Exit: Here is Why Mpho Molepo Was Axed from Generations: The Legacy
Celebrated actor Mpho Molepo, known for his role as Kabisi Moroka on ‘Generations: The Legacy‘, has been let go from the popular South African soap opera.
According to inside sources, the decision to write off Molepo’s character was made last year by the show’s writers, who felt they no longer had a compelling storyline for Kabisi.
Molepo’s contract with Morula Pictures, the production company behind the show, was initially set to expire in April 2025 but was terminated prematurely in September 2024, cutting it short by six months.
The character of Kabisi Moroka was last seen departing for Rustenburg, marking the end of Molepo’s journey on the show.
In January, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced the exits of both Molepo and Nicholas “Nick Soul” Nkuna, who played Anathi Mpofu.
The broadcaster praised both actors for their stellar performances, confirming their characters would make their final appearances by the end of March 2025.
Contract Negotiations Turn Sour
- However, Sunday World has learned that Molepo’s departure was not solely a creative decision. Sources reveal that the actor was let go after refusing to accept a significant reduction in pay and a change in his contract terms.
Initially, Molepo was informed of his contract termination and began serving a three-month notice period as stipulated in his agreement. During this time, the production house reportedly reached out to him on November 28, 2024, expressing their desire to retain him due to the importance of his character.
The production proposed a new contract that would shift Molepo from an annual fixed salary to a call basis agreement, meaning he would only be paid for the days he was called to work.
Molepo rejected this offer, requesting either the reinstatement of his original contract or a fixed number of calls per month with reasonable compensation. When the production refused to meet his terms, negotiations reached a deadlock.
Allegations of Exploitation
Sources allege that the production house offered Molepo a significantly lower rate per call, which was described as “an embarrassment” compared to his previous salary. Molepo reportedly sought fairness, asking for either the reinstatement of his contract until April 2025 or a fixed number of monthly calls with adequate pay. He was unwilling to be at the mercy of unpredictable work schedules.
Molepo’s last day on set was December 13, 2025, and he allegedly did not receive his full pay for the month. The production claimed he only worked 13 days in December, despite the show being on break for the holidays after December 13. This move has been criticized as unfair by insiders familiar with the situation.
Molepo and Production House Remain Tight-Lipped
When contacted for comment, Molepo declined to discuss the matter, stating,
“Sorry, I cannot talk about this.”
Meanwhile, ‘Generations: The Legacy‘ executive producer Mfundi Vundla emphasized that all contract negotiations were conducted in accordance with the terms of Molepo’s Independent Contractor’s Agreement.
Vundla explained that the decision to conclude Kabisi’s storyline was based on the show’s creative direction but left the door open for potential future appearances.
“As with any long-running production, storylines evolve. “Opportunities sometimes arise to reintroduce characters later on in different capacities,”Vundla said.
