Late South African Actor Patrick Shai’s Son Sechaba Shai has relapsed on drugs after two years and is blaming it on the pain of her father’s death.
“Please help me, I need to go to rehab before it’s too late.” These are the desperate words of Sechaba Shai, son of the late actor Patrick Shai, who finds himself back on the streets battling addiction.
Surviving by Pushing Trolleys
Sechaba (42) is currently surviving by pushing trolleys for shoppers at a supermarket in Meadowlands Mall, Soweto. A well-placed source revealed that Sechaba, who had been clean for two years, relapsed in July 2023. It was mentioned that he was allegedly kicked out of his family home in Dobsonville by his mother, Mmasechaba Shai.
“I was hurt when I saw him in that state. This guy used to look so good and looked like Bob Mabena, and he is very intelligent. Now he looks like a hobo because of the drugs; it’s really sad,” the source expressed concern. Sechaba, according to the source, sustains himself by using the money earned from pushing trolleys to buy both food and drugs.

The Impact of His Father’s Death
Sechaba attributed his relapse to the death of his father, Patrick Shai, who passed away from an apparent suicide at their home in Dobsonville in January 2022 at the age of 65. Despite being clean for over a year at the time, Sechaba claimed in a media interview that his father’s death motivated him to stay clean. However, things took a turn for the worse after that.
The source mentioned that Sechaba found his father hanging in their family garage two years ago, an experience that left him traumatized. Sechaba allegedly never received any counselling after the incident and claimed that his father still visits him in his sleep. According to him, he sees his father every day when he goes to sleep, and this is the reason he did not resist when his mother kicked him out of the house. He just wanted to escape the nightmares.

Pleading for a Second Chance
In an interview with ZiMoja, Sechaba expressed his desire to turn his life around. “I want to be clean and go back to being part of Kwanele Foundation, where I was heading the office of KwaneleNziswa, educating others on issues of drugs and substance abuse. Please help me before it’s too late,” he pleaded. Unfortunately, Mmasechaba Shai could not be reached for comment as her phone rang unanswered.
