Muavha expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing that this act of theft not only betrayed the trust placed in the official but also demonstrated a selfish disregard for the well-being of the vulnerable individuals under their care.
“The department condemns this alleged theft from the most vulnerable which also constitutes a breach of trust and the disregard for the well-being of those we serve.”
According to Muavha, the official’s actions came to light when security personnel conducting a routine search of staff members at the hospital gate arrested them. Subsequently, legal action was taken, leading to the arrest of the culprit.
Past Incidents Highlight Similar Offences
This incident isn’t isolated. In 2022, two food service aid officials at Letaba Hospital, Limpopo, faced similar charges of theft after being caught with patient groceries. These individuals were apprehended as they exited the hospital at the end of their night shift.
Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, the Limpopo Health MEC, expressed disappointment over the incident, noting that security personnel discovered the pilfered groceries during a vehicle search at the gate.
“The security found six packs of groceries stashed in the boot and police were immediately called. This is very disappointing, especially because our department is already operating from a shoestring budget as it is.”
