Longwe Twala’s bail has been denied and will remain in custody after his claim of illness was debunked in court. The 34-year-old appeared before the Randburg Magistrates Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday, December 4, where evidence contradicted his assertions.

Longwe’s legal troubles began on October 25, when he failed to appear in court for allegedly breaching bail conditions. Following his no-show, a warrant was issued for his arrest. Authorities apprehended him on November 26, marking the end of a four-week-long manhunt.

During a brief appearance on November 27, Longwe claimed his absence was due to illness, stating he had informed a family member, specifically his aunt. However, this defence quickly unravelled under scrutiny.

Prosecutors revealed there was no medical documentation to substantiate Longwe’s claims of illness. Furthermore, the family, including the aunt he cited, denied any knowledge of his supposed condition. This cast significant doubt on his credibility.

Adding to the scepticism, the investigating officer confirmed they could not locate Longwe at the address he provided during his initial bail application, further highlighting inconsistencies in his account.

NPA Firmly Opposes Bail

In court, Longwe expressed his intention to apply for bail once more. However, the National Prosecuting Authority has made it clear they will vigorously oppose his release. Spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane stated:

“He has already demonstrated that he cannot be trusted to adhere to bail conditions. As the state, we will present further reasons to oppose his release if he applies for bail.”

The court has scheduled the bail hearing for Monday, December 9. Until then, Longwe will remain behind bars as the prosecution prepares to present additional evidence to justify their opposition to his release.
