Outcry from the Deaf Community

The Neema Foundation for the Deaf, which advocates for the rights of Deaf individuals, voiced its concerns after receiving numerous complaints from members of the Deaf community.

Many viewers found Makhadzi’s gestures in the video offensive and disrespectful, with the timing adding fuel to the fire as the incident occurred during Deaf Awareness Month.

In response, the Neema Foundation has extended an offer to help Makhadzi better understand and connect with the Deaf community through a SASL masterclass, the DailySun reveals.

“A Learning Opportunity” – Neema Foundation

Chairwoman of the Neema Foundation, Itumeleng Motaung, addressed the incident in a statement, emphasizing the need for greater understanding between the hearing and Deaf communities.

While we note the media reports about her apology, this incident couldn’t have come at a worse time, as we are commemorating Deaf Awareness Month.

Makhadzi’s actions unfortunately appeared to mock an integral part of the Deaf community. We believe this unfortunate incident presents an opportunity for growth and learning,” Motaung said.

She continued by urging the singer to take advantage of this moment, stating,

We think by extending this offer, Makhadzi will see an opportunity to use the platform to celebrate diversity and inclusivity, setting an example for others fostering greater understanding and respect for the Deaf community.”
