Mawhoo Faces R1 Million Defamation Lawsuit Over Viral Voice Note
Amapiano vocalist Mawhoo, is facing a potential R1 million lawsuit after she allegedly referred to Blue Screen Entertainment’s owner and staff as “scammers” in a voice note.
The Durban-based events company has accused the artist of defamation and issued a letter of demand calling for a public retraction and apology.

Voice Note Sparks Legal Storm
According to a letter obtained by Sunday World, dated May 16 and signed by Brian Steel, head of legal at Blue Screen Entertainment, Mawhoo allegedly sent a voice note to one of the company’s representatives. In it, she accused the organisation and its owner of being scammers — without providing any justification or evidence.
The company claims Mawhoo was paid in full to perform at the Durban Music Festival on May 3, where American rapper Rick Ross was the headline act.
Blue Screen argues that the voice note caused serious reputational and commercial harm to their business.
Apology Demanded or Legal Action Looms
In the letter, addressed to both MaWhoo and her company Mawhoo Entertainment, Blue Screen Entertainment demands a written or audio apology by close of business on Monday, May 19. The apology must retract the defamatory statements in full.
Failure to comply, the company warns, will lead to formal legal proceedings for defamation. Blue Screen is seeking damages of no less than R1 million, citing harm to their professional standing.
“Your actions constitute a serious act of defamation under South African law,” the letter states.

Not Mawhoo’s First Clash with Promoters
This is not Mawhoo’s first brush with controversy involving event organisers. In October 2024, she publicly challenged a promoter named Eddz, who claimed she failed to perform at the Blouberg Spring Festival in Limpopo. Mawhoo insisted that no booking or payment had ever been confirmed.
That matter was reportedly resolved after she threatened legal action, forcing the promoter to backtrack.
