Moja Love has issued a statement in response to the death of an alleged drug dealer who was confronted by the crew of its show Sizokuthola.
Sizokuthola follows presenter Xolani Khumalo and his team as they raid the homes and businesses of suspected drug dealers with the help of community law enforcement groups and police officials.
Drug Dealer Dies After Interrogation
According to reports, Robert “Kicks” Varrie died after he was interrogated by Khumalo and his crew at his house in Katlehong.
He was allegedly tortured to reveal more drugs hidden at his premises and then dropped off at the Thelle Mogoerane regional hospital in Vosloorus, where he was declared dead.
Moja LoveTo Investigate Sizokuthola Presenter Xolani Khumalo And Crew
Moja Love spokesperson Nonzwakazi Cekete said in a statement that the crew acted on a credible and verifiable tip-off from the community and conducted the bust within the confines of the law. She said Varrie did not cooperate with the questioning and only agreed to hand over drugs after persistence by the members of the community policing forum.
“Whilst Moja Love can confirm that the crew was within the vicinity of the premises when the deceased was being questioned, the channel is still investigating the circumstances that led to the deceased having to be allegedly rushed to hospital. We will wait for the official autopsy results for the cause of death,” Cekete said.
She added that the channel would cooperate with any investigations that may be initiated by the police, who are probing a case of murder in connection with the incident. She also expressed condolences to Varrie’s family and offered counselling assistance to the crew and any other interested individuals.
Sizokuthola has sparked mixed reactions from viewers. Some have praised Khumalo and his crew for exposing and fighting drug abuse in communities, while others have criticised them for violating human rights and endangering lives.
On social media, some fans have rallied behind Khumalo and his crew, using the hashtag #HandsOffXolani, while others have called for Moja Love to cancel the show and face legal consequences.
