A KZN man was killed by his friend after a brawl over Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year in a case that has left social media users dumbfounded.

KwaZulu-Natal police have taken into custody a 24-year-old man involved in the fatal stabbing of his 25-year-old friend. The incident unfolded during a heated argument over the Ukhozi FM Song of the Year competition on New Year’s Eve.

The altercation occurred at a local store in eMpangeni, where the two friends, known enthusiasts of rival maskandi musicians Khuzani Mpungose and Mthandeni, clashed. The disagreement escalated, leading one of them to brandish a sharp object and fatally stab the other.

Arrest Confirmation by KZN Police Spokesperson

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the spokesperson for the KZN police, confirmed the arrest, stating, “Police in Ntambanana have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 25-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed to death at Ebhokisini Area.”

Satma Expresses Concern and Calls for Non-Violence

The South African Traditional Music Achievements Awards (Satma) expressed deep concern over the incident. Keletso Dlamini, Satma’s spokesperson, announced plans to engage with the SABC and other stakeholders on the matter.

Dlamini appealed to traditional music lovers to avoid violence, emphasizing that traditional music should be celebrated positively. “No one deserves to die over a song. Let us spread a message of love and unity,” urged Dlamini.

Khuzani Mpungose to Address Controversy

Khuzani Mpungose, the winner of Ukhozi FM’s New Year Song of the Year contest, is expected to break his silence. The artist faced a violent incident at the New Year’s Eve music event, where his winning song, Umjolo Lowo, triggered an attack from the crowd, suspected to be followers of Mthandeni.
