Mzansi Questions Inconsistencies In Zandile Khumalo’s Testimony In Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial

Social media users are already starting to poke holes in singer Zandie Khumalo’s testimony in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. The singer, who was present the day the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was gunned down, broke down as she identified one of the intruders.

Zandie, who is also the sister of Senzo’s then-girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo, narrated the story of how two men barged into their family home in Vosloorus with guns in hand and demanded that they hand over their money and cellphones. Present in the house that fateful day was Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi, Zandie, Zandie’s then-boyfriend Longwe Twala, and Meyiwa’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala.

The Ikhwela singer said she remembered accused number two’s face as she broke down and accused them of having ruined the family’s lives. “Are you guys even aware of what you did to our lives? Are you guys even aware of what you did to us as a family that day? The damage that you guys caused.”

“They Were Wearing Masks”

Zandie’s testimony is, however, in contrast with what she told eNCA journalist, Silindelo Masikane, in an interview in July last year. When asked if she could identify the intruders, she said: “They were wearing masks half of the time. There’s no way I can say who it was. And none of those guys [the five arrested suspects] had dreadlocks, maybe they’ve had haircuts, some of them gained weight. It’s been a while. Right now I cannot identify those men. Right now there are five suspects, but two people came into our house.”

There were delays in the musician’s testimony as on Monday – when she was due to appear – as she applied for a complete media blackout on the day. Zandie stated that she fears her testimony will be subject to comparison and “ridiculed,” therefore requesting that there be no audio or visual broadcast in court when she takes the witness stand.

However, on Thursday, Zandie’s request was rejected by presiding Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, who said audio broadcasting is permitted. However, the media will not be allowed to show the witness.

Before the verdict, Zandie received heavy backlash on social media, but she was not fazed. In an Instagram post on Tuesday, she wrote: “Naze nakwata bo 🤣🤣🤣🤣lapho kusazoba worse yazi nizoshona nibancane ❤️ Take screenshots ke 😂😂 [You guys are so angry… and it’s only going to get worse… you will die young. Go ahead and take screenshots].” In the first part of her post, she quoted the lyrics of an old maskandi song that has become popular on TikTok. The song is about a woman who sarcastically suggests that her haters give her poison to finally kill her because all of their prior attempts have failed.
