Nadia Nakai Opens Up About Life After AKA’s Death

Rapper Nadia Nakai has opened up about the immense grief she has faced following the death of her boyfriend, rapper Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA.

The emotional conversation took place on season three of Young, Famous & African, which premiered on Netflix on 17 January.

According to The South African, Nadia admitted to Fantana that while she puts on a brave face, AKA’s death has been quite overwhelming.

It’s difficult, just maneuvering life, you know? Low-key I’m not fine, and I know I need to go to therapy. But I don’t see that happening any time soon… I just have too much to unpack,” Nadia told Fantana.

Grieving in Private

During her confessional, Nadia revealed that she often tells people she is fine to avoid making them worry. However, she shared that her true struggles come to the surface when she is alone.

My person is gone. So, it’s difficult. After losing Kiernan I like to tell people that I’m fine because I don’t want to worry people. And I feel like I’m okay to a certain extent until I’m alone,” she said.

Friends and Family Offer Support

Nadia shared that her friends and AKA’s mother, Lynn Forbes, have provided tremendous support during this difficult time. Lynn even stayed with her for a month to ensure she wasn’t alone.

Kiernan’s mom literally lived with me for a month to just make sure I am not by myself. I couldn’t do it, I was on suicide watch,” Nadia revealed.

Despite the pain, Nadia acknowledged the need for therapy, although she admitted she wasn’t ready to confront her emotions fully. She expressed her determination to push forward, even as she navigates the void left by AKA’s absence.

“There was a day where I actually was by myself, and I realised that I can’t sit in this house—I have to work.”
