New Evidence On Accused Number Three’s Gun Revealed In Senzo Meyiwa Murder Trial

The murder case of Senzo Meyiwa, the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper who was killed in Vosloorus in 2014, continued on Monday, 14 August, with a new witness taking the stand. Sergent Mandla Masondo, a police officer who arrested one of the accused, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, in 2015, revealed that the gun found on him was owned by a Fidelity security guard.

How Mthobisi Prince Mncube Was Arrested

Mncube is accused number three in the murder case, along with four other men who are facing various charges related to Meyiwa’s death. He was arrested in February 2015 for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in his room in a separate incident. Sgt Masondo told the court that Mncube had dreadlocks and a hand injury when he was arrested.

The Origin of the Gun Found on Mncube

Sgt Masondo said that the serial number of the gun was scratched off, so they used the “etching method” to trace it and found that it belonged to a Fidelity security guard. He also said that he downloaded the phonebook, info, contacts and images from Mncube’s Samsung phone to place him on the scene and to get his accomplice.

No Evidence Linking the Gun to Meyiwa’s Murder

However, when cross-examined by Advocate Charles Mnisi who is representing Mncube, Sgt Masondo admitted that “there is nothing depicted by the firearm that was recovered on this case.” He added: “Should it have been, definitely, I think I was going to deal with it at that time and others.” He also said that the firearm was not tested for fingerprints and they had not obtained a search warrant when they searched Mncube’s room.

The other four men who are standing trial for Meyiwa’s murder are:
