Nomzamo Mbatha Faces Backlash from Shaka’s Descendants Over Shaka iLembe’s Success

South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha is facing criticism from Shaka Zulu’s descendants.

This comes after, Nomzamo Mbatha who is the executive producer of the popular TV series ‘Shaka iLembe’, took to social media on Wednesday to celebrate the series’ success, including her first South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) nomination for Best Actress and the show’s numerous accolades.

In her post, she expressed gratitude for the team behind ‘Shaka iLembe’ and acknowledged the 10,000 jobs the production created.

Family Discontent Over Historical Depictions

Despite Mbatha’s celebratory tone, her message struck a nerve with the Mhlongo family, descendants of Shaka Zulu.

Mhlathuze Mhlongo, the family’s spokesperson, voiced disappointment, claiming the series misrepresented their heritage.

According to Mhlongo, ‘Shaka iLembe’ was created without the family’s consent, despite initial consultations that were allegedly presented as simple research.

Nomzamo knows very well that there’s an ongoing dispute regarding ‘Shaka iLembe’. The play was broadcast without our consent.

They misrepresented our culture, and we were also not compensated for our intellectual property,” Mhlongo explained, adding that the family’s shared information was used in ways they hadn’t approved.

Allegations of Historical Distortion

Mhlongo also took issue with how the show portrayed Princess Nandi, the mother of Shaka Zulu. He highlighted that Princess Nandi, who is often seen as an icon within the clan, was not accurately depicted.

Queen Nandi was Shaka’s mother and was never married. What we saw on TV was a misrepresentation of facts; actually, it was an insult to Nandi and her family,” Mhlongo stated.

He expressed frustration that Nomzamo Mbatha’s post felt dismissive of the family’s grievances.

Call for Respectful Representation

While acknowledging Nomzamo Mbatha’s accomplishments, Mhlongo made it clear the family’s frustrations stem from perceived cultural misrepresentation, not personal animosity.

We’re not jealous of Nomzamo, but she’s spitting on Nandi’s grave. She must just enjoy the money and keep Queen Nandi out of it; this is mockery,” he concluded.
