The NPA has officially decided not to pursue legal action against Matthew Lani, a content creator accused of impersonating a medical doctor. This decision comes after an investigation failed to provide sufficient evidence to support the allegations.

NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that the case has been closed due to a lack of evidence linking Lani to the alleged impersonation. “The matter is considered resolved,” Mjonondwane stated.

Matthew Lani first garnered public attention in October of the previous year after claims surfaced that he was pretending to be a medical doctor. He reportedly shared several TikTok videos filmed in hospital corridors, portraying himself in a professional medical environment.

Security staff at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg apprehended Lani in October 2023. Following his arrest, he appeared in court at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court. However, the NPA chose not to proceed with the case, citing insufficient evidence to substantiate the charges of impersonation.

Investigations and Legal Proceedings

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The NPA indicated that a decision regarding potential criminal charges would be made once the Hawks completed their inquiry and submitted the case docket. Despite these efforts, the case ultimately lacked the necessary evidence to proceed.

Lani’s Response to the Closure

Following the NPA’s announcement, Lani expressed relief at the outcome. “This has been a challenging journey, and I am beyond thrilled to finally put it behind me. Losing everything taught me valuable lessons about being cautious with my online actions,” Lani remarked.

He also shared his intention to visit the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court to obtain official documentation confirming the case closure. Additionally, he plans to retrieve his confiscated electronic devices from Brixton Police Station, which were seized during the investigation.
