A 39-year-old patient burns to death at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal after lighting a cigarette while on an oxygen mask. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health confirmed the incident, stating that the patient had been isolated in a single-bed cubicle due to his medical condition.

According to officials, the fire was ignited when the patient used a cigarette lighter near the oxygen mask. The mask was linked to the hospital’s main oxygen line, which fueled the flames. The fire was confined to the patient’s cubicle, but the situation escalated quickly. Another patient in the ward noticed the smoke and immediately alerted the nursing staff, who rushed to the scene.

The hospital staff acted swiftly, using fire extinguishers to control the blaze. The facility’s fire detection system and water sprinklers were also activated, helping to contain the fire. Despite these efforts, the patient suffered severe burns and tragically passed away due to his injuries.
