South Africans Troll Cyril Ramaphosa for Late Congrats to Tyla
South Africans flooded X (formerly Twitter) with jubilant messages following Tyla Seethal’s historic Grammy win for her chart-topping track ‘Water’.
President Cyril Ramaphosa joined the chorus of congratulations, but his message sparked a wave of trolling from citizens across the nation.
Tyla’s achievement is particularly remarkable as she has become the youngest South African to win a Grammy Award, and it’s worth noting that this is her first award to date.

Cyril Ramaphosa Celebrates Tyla
Joining the thousands of fellow citizens, President Cyril Ramaphosa took to social media to extend his congratulations to Tyla, while also thanking her for “flying the flag.”
“Woke up to the news of our very own Tyla winning the Best African Music Performance for her song ‘Water’ at the #Grammys. She is the youngest African to win such a prestigious award, adding herself to list of eminent South African artists and musicians who have made an indelible mark on the world stage. @Tyllaaaaaaa we congratulate you and we celebrate with you. Your win affirms South Africa’s sustained success in various international fora. Thank you for your authenticity and for flying the flag,” he wrote.

Mixed Reactions to Ramaphosa’s Congratulations
However, while South Africans revelled in Tyla’s triumph, they weren’t as generous with their sentiments toward the ANC President. Many seized the opportunity to criticize Ramaphosa for what they perceived as tardiness in acknowledging the win, with some questioning his leadership priorities. Others accused him of attempting to gain favour with Tyla for political gain, asserting that her vote in the upcoming elections wouldn’t swing in the ANC’s favour. Some even clamoured for a public holiday to commemorate the Grammy achievement.
