‘Promoting killers?’ Mzansi Threaten To Boycott State Theatre Show For Booking Kelly Khumalo
Singer Kelly Khumalo’s upcoming second gospel explosion show, scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26 August at The South African State Theatre (SAST) in Tshwane, has sparked controversy on social media.
The event, organized in partnership with Kelly Khumalo’s company, KK Entertainment, has already put tickets on sale, but some netizens are expressing their disapproval due to recent developments in the Senzo Meyiwa case.
South African State Theatre’s Announcement
The State Theatre announced the upcoming event on its Facebook page on Friday, 28 July, urging fans not to wait too long to secure their tickets. They wrote, “SAST will be home to Kelly Khumalo when she brings her 2nd Gospel Explosion. Just be reminded that tickets are selling faster than fat cakes. You wait, you miss out! Webtickets online, Pick n Pay stores, and SAST box office are now selling tickets.”
Backlash on Social Media
Despite the excitement surrounding the show, many social media users were quick to criticize the State Theatre’s decision to feature Kelly Khumalo. Citing the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa case, they expressed their reservations about attending the event.
Llydo Matlou wrote: “After today’s revelations I have a reason not to come. Keep social distance, wear a mask, and sanitize.”
Fikile Ngwenya said: “I’m coming to disrupt her show, we coming.”
Sibusiso Encore said: “Down the street there is a court in session, and she will be singing, and we’ll be clapping hands, SASSA FRIKA.”
Noah Makholwa said: “This one killed Senzo Meyiwa, allegedly.”
New Developments in the Senzo Meyiwa Case
Adding fuel to the controversy, on the same day of the State Theatre’s announcement, Colonel Lambertus Steyn testified in the Northern Gauteng High Court, revealing that Kelly Khumalo had been in contact with accused number five and three of the four other accused in Senzo Meyiwa’s case. The Asine hitmaker has been under scrutiny since Senzo’s death, and while she maintains her innocence, public sentiment remains divided, with some believing she has a case to answer for.
Kelly Khumalo’s Response
As of now, Kelly Khumalo and The South African State Theatre have not responded to the backlash and controversy surrounding the upcoming show. Kelly Khumalo has consistently denied any involvement in Senzo Meyiwa’s death, emphasizing her innocence in various interviews.
