A gang of robbers was shot dead following a gory and daring cash-in-transit heist in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, earlier today.

The gang of three, who drove a white Volkswagen Polo, marked one cash-in-transit van that was moving millions of rands.

After following it, they successfully stopped and disarmed the security guards operating the truck. They then placed detonators on the van and managed to blow it to shreds.

Some of the notes inside the truck flew into the air and scattered all over the road after the deafening explosion. The robbers then moved in swiftly to collect as much cash as possible before the police arrived.

The Explosive Pandemic

CIT heists are a serious problem in South Africa. According to reports, there were 200 heists in 2023 alone, and the number of incidents increased by 24% over the first three months of the year. Highly organised and armed gangs carry out these crimes and target armoured vehicles transporting cash between banks, retailers, and ATMs.

The robbers use explosives, firearms, and high-speed vehicles to ambush and overpower the security guards. They often escape with millions of rand. The police have been struggling to curb the CIT heists, despite some arrests and convictions of the suspects.
