Sangoma’s Role Unearthed in Senzo Meyiwa’s Trial: Accused’s Mystical Cleansing Ritual After Murder Revealed
In a surprising turn of events during the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial at the Pretoria High Court, it was revealed that the accused sought the services of a Sangoma for a cleansing ritual immediately following the murder.
Sangoma Lion Robert Zwane and the Accused
Sangoma Lion Robert Zwane emerged as a central figure in this revelation, testifying that he provided the accused with powerful traditional muthi which raised eyebrows in the courtroom.
The accused, including Muzi Sibiya, one of the primary suspects, initially approached Sangoma Zwane for muthi called “nhlanhl’emhlophe” to illuminate their path as they were about to embark on a specific endeavor, reportedly searching for work.
Seeking Cleansing Muthi
Days later, the accused returned to Sangoma Zwane, but this time, their purpose was different. They sought cleansing muthi as one of them had suffered an injury during their previous undertaking Sangoma Zwane identified Muzi Sibiya as the primary point of contact among the accused during this interaction.
The Cleansing Ritual and Muthi Used
Sangoma Zwane testified that he performed a cleansing ritual for the three men and used a specific muthi called “isihlazi sokugeza” for the cleansing.
He revealed that such cleansing rituals are commonly used when individuals have encountered misfortune or lost a family member.

Sangoma Zwane confirmed that he charged a fee for his services and explained that while he typically charges R100 for consultations, the accused paid him R500 for the muthi, Zimoja reveals.
The Stolen Murder Weapon
In another pivotal development, a manager from SBV Services, Pieter Jacobus Smuts, testified that the firearm believed to have been used in Senzo Meyiwa’s murder was reported stolen during a cash-in-transit heist at a shopping center in Rabbie Ridge in May 2013.
The weapon, identified as a CZ 9mm parabellum, had its serial number traced back to SBV Services. This information raises questions about the journey of the murder weapon and its connection to the accused. However, further investigation and evidence are required to establish a direct link between the stolen firearm and the murder.
